Samenvatting

Habemus Papam ('we hebben een paus!') is de uitroep die van oudsher wordt gedaan wanneer een nieuwe paus is aangesteld. In deze film is de paus net overleden en de kardinalen hebben de moeilijke taak een nieuwe aan te wijzen. Die wordt gevonden in Il Papa (Piccoli). Met het vooruitzicht de leider van miljoenen katholieken te zijn krijgt hij echter koudwatervrees en weigert de aanstelling. Zijn psycholoog (Moretti) moet hem helpen om het zelfvertrouwen terug te krijgen dat hij nodig heeft. Terwijl er geen paus is, doet het hele systeem binnen het Vaticaan er alles aan net te doen alsof er niets aan de hand is, de kardinalen spelen gewoon een potje volleybal. Ondertussen zijn ze wel hard bezig om de gelovigen buiten op het Sint Pieterplein te geven waar ze op wachten: hun nieuwe paus.
Habemus Papam gaat over het beschermde leven in het Vaticaan, en hoe we onszelf allerlei restricties opleggen en hoe je jezelf zodoende tekort doet.

Saint Peter's Square in Rome. A huge mass of people crowds into the Bernini colonnades. A cardinal appears on the balcony of the basilica and pronounces triumphantly the ritual words: "Habemus Papam!". People scream happily, waving flags. Then, a piercing scream is heard from behind the drapes. With his face full of embarrassment and disbelief, the cardinal retreats slowly. The crowd, astonished, goes silent. The world is dismayed.
What could have happened? Conspiracy theorists and plotters are already saying that the pope, whoever he might be, had a stroke and the death is being kept a secret. But the truth is simpler and more embarrassing: His Holiness is having a panic attack. Who is therefore entrusted to the care of the eminent psychologist Brezzi (Nanni Moretti), summoned and immediately segregated in the Vatican to solve this never before seen pontifical crisis.
